listenlisten001 –– the city by thozama mputa
“I was never comfortable with only seeing the past in black and white, so I add and search for the colour in it.”
“Drawing is how I communicate and understand.”
This is Thozama Mputa: a South African architect, urbanist, and artist with something of a borderless imagination. She combines color, texture, daily surroundings, pattern and a distinct appreciation for all things Sadé in almost everything: from her personal wardrobe to her drawings.
This ability to mix things up and hold her own as both an artist and landscape architect with comfort and joy is part habit, part compulsion. “I do the work that I do because I need to draw everyday. I do [it] because it’s important for me to make and see people safe and happy,” she says.
With her dream to “own a greenhouse that doubles up as a studio”, it seemed fitting to ask Thozama to curate a playlist inspired by cities and their charms. The result is pure time travel: a mix that takes us from lonely streets of Moscow to South-side Chicago, with pitstops in Oslo, Barcelona, Dakar, London, and more.
